KFC in Ghana?!?

I decided to take a break from some very intense drafting to check Facebook, and what do I see? Apparently KFC has opened its first branch in Ghana, on Oxford Street!

The news comes as such a surprise and I can't help but be excited. Not by the thought of eating their breaded, fried chicken in the heart of Accra, but as always, by the idea of something new happening. Of course I am also a bit anxious about what this means for us; will there be an influx of other unhealthy fastfood joints? How soon before we start seeing an increased number of US-style obese people on the streets of Accra?

Before my thoughts wonder any further, can somebody kindly confirm whether this news is true? According to this article, 4 outlets are to be opened in Ghana this year. Send me picture evidence, pleeeeease!

It is a good turn of events in terms of making Ghana more visible globlally, IMO.

A major global fast food company doing business in GH does give some testament about the conducive business environment that the country offers to foreign ventures.

If I were a business minded Ghanaian farmer, I would see nothing but opportunity.

If I were a Ghanaian civil worker in the Health Ministry, I would see the same.

It doesn't have to be an either or scenario. KFC can do good business in Ghana without necessarily stuffing population with the same artery-clogging, oil-dripping chicken patties they serve to Americans.

In Europe KFC has a pretty different, more health-conscious model (those who have sampled their food in Scandanavia know what I'm talking about).

Different environment, different rules. Ghanaians will only get as much as they demand.

You make a point, inmyownwordss, but I'd be very surprised if KFC is planning on serving anything other than their (to use your words) artery-clogging, oil-dripping chicken patties in Ghana. That is what they serve in every KFC I have been to across Europe. I did see that there's mashed potato and two salads on the Copenhagen menu, other than that I'm not sure of the health conscious menu you're referring to.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you see it), I know Ghanaians will not be as demanding as Scandinavians can be when it comes to nutrition, so it looks like we have a lot of greasy fried chicken to look forward to in Accra!

KFC in Ghana? You're kidding right?!Had no clue...then again...KFC has been all over Southern Africa when I was growing in t '80s so it is about time that KFC hit Ghana. Not that I even eat chicken though....I wonder what Papaye is going to do with this competition. Well, I hear Walmart has bought Game stores so globalization is indeed leading to rapid expansion of multi-national corps into new markets. What's next?

I'm guessing you're still not back in Ghana either, Abena, I need someone to confirm this news for me!

Completely agree with you, what next? Well, if a McDonalds opens soon, I know we've made it, lol!

Indeed, it will be interesting to see how Papaye reacts to this. Might be time to invest a bit in customer service training...?

@Maya Mame, was speaking to my big brother in GH on the phone yesterday and he was adamant that no KFC has made an appearance as yet!

Thanks for the update, Abena. Will have to check with my Fb friend on why he's over-exciting us over nothing.

it is true that KFC will be opening some branches here. The one is Osu is not open yet but the building can be found on the main road kind of opposite 'On the Run' they have covered the building up for now but the logo and street sign is there. we are gearing up for them. Can't wait, just hope it tastes the same.

They don't serve wings, but chicken pieces. So almost the same as the chicken on the roadside, but not as spicy.
The fries are ok, fresh oil, unlike other joints in Accra.
Meal with two pieces and fries is 7c, added coke 2c.

Thanks Sam, reall appreciate it. All in all, it sounds like their prices are in line with other fast food joints.

Glad to hear the oil's fresh too! ;-)

FYI, the KFC grand opening was yesterday. We drove past to a lot of drumming and other hoopla. My American kids were besides themselves with glee. We'll give it a go during the week and let them (hopefully) have a taste of home. For my money, though, KFC was never a favorite. Now if White Castle (local NJ fast food) wants to come here, they've got my business!
